Nowadays, environmental pollution is no longer just a problem for a single country or region; it has become a global issue. The socio-economic development of nations worldwide has significantly impacted the environment, altering human living conditions and making them increasingly worse.
Environmental pollution has caused severe consequences, negatively affecting ecosystems, directly impacting human health, and becoming a major concern for society. With the desire to provide an overview of the current environmental situation and practical solutions to protect the environment, Focus presents key information such as: What is environmental pollution? What are the current types of environmental pollution? Let’s explore these topics in more detail with Focus.
The environment consists of natural and artificial material elements that are closely related, surrounding humans and influencing their lives, production, survival, and development. Environmental pollution refers to the alteration of the physical, chemical, and biological properties of environmental components, deviating from environmental technical standards and causing harmful effects on human health, living organisms, and nature.
Environmental pollution occurs when harmful or foreign substances cause severe changes in the quality of environmental factors such as soil, water, and air, exceeding the natural tolerance thresholds of organisms (leading to deformation or mass extinction) and humans (causing illnesses, diseases, health deterioration, or even death). The natural tolerance levels vary among different species.
For humans, the tolerance threshold is defined by environmental standards, which set the permissible limits for environmental factors like soil, water, and air. These standards serve as the basis for environmental management, ensuring the survival of organisms and protecting human health, life, and labor capacity.
Soil pollution results from human activities that alter ecological factors beyond the limits tolerated by soil-dwelling communities. Soil serves as a habitat for humans and most terrestrial organisms, as well as a foundation for civil, industrial, and cultural constructions. It is a valuable resource used for agricultural production to ensure food supply.
However, with the increasing population, industrial development, and urbanization, arable land is shrinking, soil quality is deteriorating, and per capita land availability is decreasing. In Vietnam alone, land resource degradation is a serious and concerning issue.
Water pollution is the negative alteration of the physical, chemical, and biological properties of water due to the presence of foreign substances in liquid or solid form, making the water harmful to humans and living organisms. It reduces biodiversity in aquatic environments. In terms of spread and impact, water pollution is a more alarming issue than soil pollution.

Air pollution refers to significant changes in air composition, mainly caused by smoke, dust, vapors, or foreign gases introduced into the atmosphere. These pollutants cause unpleasant odors, reduce visibility, alter climate conditions, harm human health, and negatively impact animals and crops. Air pollution can result from both human activities and natural processes.
Radioactive Pollution: Caused by human activities such as mining, processing radioactive materials, and handling radioactive waste. It increases natural radiation levels, affecting health (causing headaches, dizziness, nausea, and even skin or bone cancer).
Light Pollution: Excessive artificial lighting negatively affects the environment and disrupts the growth of plants and animals.
